Gifts part3: Myrrh (audio)

Wednesday night we finished up our three week Christmas series entitled “Gifts”.  We have focused on the three gifts that the Wise Men gave to Jesus: Gold, Frankincense, & Myrrh. 

Myrrh was used for many things, but mostly for medicinal purposes. 

• It’s used in burring a body
• It’s used as a perfume to try and mask the smell of decay
• It was used to clean wounds
• It was used to treat: gum disease, worms, cough, asthma, bad breath, indigestion, sore throat, and even STD’s such as gonnerehha
• It was used as an anestetic and a pain killer before drugs like morphine came around
• It was mixed with wine to make a strong drink in order to attempt to deaden pain

Myrrh comes from a tree known as Commifera Myrrha.  It’s found within the tree.  How you got to it was to gash the tree bark and it would ooze out and used for healing.  JESUS was gashed, blood flowed out for the healing of the world of sin!

When the Wise Men gave gifts, they were declaring…

• Gold – a King – His Royality
• Frankincense – a Priest – His Deity
• Myrrh – a Savior – His Humanity

There is no savior without the shedding of blood (Hebrews 9:22)

But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed. – Isaiah 53:5 (NLT)

The cute little baby… The “Little Lord Jesus” that “lay down his sweet head” was born into this world for one reason – to die.

This week, when you see Mary holding her cute little baby, remember this: that she held Him in her arms 30 years later as she took His dead body off the cross.
